Hypertension: Elevation of either number suggests hypertension (high blood pressure). It is not unusual for the upper (systolic) or lower (diastolic) to go up disproportionately. Often younger people have high diastolic, and older people high systolic. Both are dangerous but systolic is worse. If values are above 140/90 that indicates stage 1 hypertension. Blood pressure meds: When your lower number (diastolic) of your blood pressure is high- you probably have hypertension and should be on a blood pressure medication. Caffeine should be avoided- anytime but particularly when hypertensive. Getting rest may help, but please see your health care professional for follow up and stay on your medication.

Yes: A normal BP has a wide range and your numbers fall within those numbers. In general, the lower both numbers, the better. If you look it up (anywhere) you will be told a normal BP is 120/80. That is a normal, ideal BP. The closer you get to 120/80, the better.

First : First of all make sure he has his blood pressure checked on three separate occasions in a doctors office or by a medical professional. If his systolic is elevated all three times (between 130-140) then he should try a 3 month trial of diet (low sodium) and a exercise routine. However, depending on his history and physical exam findings his doctor may want to start him on medications or find secondary causes of high blood pressure. He should be under the care of a doctor for this problem so it can be monitored and treated effectively.

Both are bad: Docs used to think that a high number was normal with age, research found a higher risk for stroke with higher upper number than lower number if either number or both are high, there is risk for heart attack and stroke, and both need treatment. Risk starts to climb at 125/75, not 140/90.  Blood pressure over 130/85 needs to be treated first with lifestyle changes, then medication if fails.

How do you feel?: "low blood pressure" is a pop diagnosis . The numbers (top is highest it gets when the heart beats, bottom is lowest when the heart relaxes) need only be high enough to keep the blood flowing around your body. Stop worrying about "normal ranges" and ask the real question -- is your body working?

Go see your doctor: Actually, first re-measure it (which I'm sure you've already done). Then take a deep breath, wait 5 minutes (don't hold your breath! just breathe normally) &amp; recheck. Also check your equipment. Did you drop/damage your BP cuff? Run out of meds? Start smoking (more)? Drinking (more)? Stop exercising? Eat more salt or salty foods? Sleep less than usual? Be sure to bring BP cuff in for calibration
