Two separate: Eye allergies can be controlled with topical antihistamine and often with nasal steroid (on the nose only) as well.  Eye allergies may lead to dryness but people can have both with artificial or Rx anti-inflammatory eye drop needed. If you have allergies, best Rx is avoidance of allergens. Otherwise allergy shots may be the answer.

Dry : Dry eye is a common medical condition that results from an inadequate tear film.  The normal tear film constantly coats the surface of the eye with moisture.  This moisture is needed for good vision and eye health.

In dry eye, the tear film evaporates easily and allows dry areas to develop on the eye surface.  This will cause red and sandy feeling eyes.  Other common symptoms of dry eye are blurred vision, and watering eyes from the irritation.

Fortunately, dry eye has many treatment options.  Over-the-counter lubricating drops, also called artificial tears, will often help.  For best effect, artificial tears should be used at least three times daily.  There are many different brands of artificial tears, and it is best to try a few different brands to see which gives the most relief.  Some patients also benefit from oral omega 3 fatty acid supplements, e.g., fish oil or flaxseed oil.

To ensure proper diagnosis, see your ophthalmologist who can also offer more advanced dry eye treatment, if needed.

Artificial Tears: Artificial tears can help the discomfort of dry eyes.   They should be available in any drug store.  Please be sure to be checked by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor) to be sure you're right that it's simply dry eyes.

Dry or allergy: You are a bit young for dry eye unless you have other medical conditions or are taking medicines that can cause dry eye.  Computer use, tv and excessive reading can reduce blink rate and exacerbate dry eye.  Try a lubricating eye drop when you have to read for an extended period of time, at the end of the day and when you are going to be in a hot / dry / windy / air-conditioned environment.

Not likely: This treatment is not standard nor scientifically validated.  It is not likely to be helpful for sjogren's syndrome because the problem with that is inadequate tear production.  Punctal plugs, artificial tear supplementation and Restasis would be better choices for this problem.

Evaporative: In evaporative dry eye, there is a deficient oil layer that prevents evaporation. So, the tears clear too rapidly from the ocular surface. Some otc drops for this include systane balance and refresh optive advanced. Taking oral omega-3 supplements and improving oil gland function with lid hygiene and warm compresses can help as well. Rosacea can worsen this. Other types of tears may be needed.

Lid hygiene: Blepharitis can involve the front of the lids (base of the eyelashes) or the back portion of the lids (where oil glands are located). It can definitely exacerbate dry eyes. Without an exam, it is difficult to recommend treatment. However, you might try warm compresses 5 - 10 minutes followed by a "lid scrub" with a commercially available pad such as occusoft. Systane ultra or refresh optive tears.

I've : I've found that Xalatan (latanoprost) is one of the best tolerated of all of the glaucoma medications.  Sometimes it is the preservative in the medication that is the most irritating and can cause a toxic conjunctivitis/keratitis that looks a lot like dry eyes.  However, if the glaucoma is severe and you really need the ocular pressure lower then sometimes it is worth it to continue the glaucoma medications and treat the toxicity or dryness at the same time with other medications.  It's a lot of drops but worth it to preserve vision.  I have no financial interests in Xalatan (latanoprost) or any other glaucoma medications.

Artificial tears: Try non preserved artificial tears first. If that doesn't work, punctal plugs or Restasis can help.

Artificial tears: Dry eyes can be bothersome and cause chronic discomfort. There are many therapy options: best to start naturally (warm compresses, diluted baby shampoo scrubs) &amp; move up a "ladder approach" to antibiotic cream, otc artificial tears.
