Spinal narrowing: Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings where spinal nerves leave the spinal column. It usually occurs as we age & disks become dry & shrink. Also, the bones & ligaments of the spine swell or grow larger due to arthritis or inflammation. Besides pain, numbness and weakness can also occur.

Depends on cause and: Severity. Physical therapy and injections can help early. Pain is usually the first symptoms, and leaning over (flexing the lumbar spine) will make it feel slightly better. If it is progressing, you can start to pinch nerves that go to you your legs (assuming lumbar stenosis). It usually does not progress to something as severe as paralysis unless it is from a bad cause like vertebral instability.

Technically yes but: People are born with a small, medium or large spinal canal.  Spinal stenosis is when the canal is too narrow for nerves  resulting in compression.   Canals  narrow with time due to degeneration.  By age 60, 20% have by imaging stenosis but not necessarily symptoms.  Other causes are: congenital v acquired due to - fracture, herniation, tumor, fat, instability. Most are treated without surgery.

Yes: Cerivcal stenosis may cause headaches, neck pain or upper back pain, but upper back pain is commonly caused by arthritis or muscles (myofascial pain).  This type of pain may respond well to physical therapy, heat, anti-inflammatories, steroid injections or radiofrequency ablation (rfa) treatments.  I would recommend discussing it with your doctor. : You could ask physical therapist to teach you appropriate exercises for you back and condition to relieve tension in the muscles. Regular exercises daily should be helpful.

Decreased space: The spinal cord passes through a "tunnel" in the bone.  With arthritis,  disc bulging, and overgrowth of surrounding ligaments, the spine cord can be compressed.  The compressions is called stenosis.

Cervical stenosis: Surgery is one option so please continue to consult w/MD/DO.  I don't know the stats on this, but a chiropractor may be worth a consult also.  You can coordinate between MD/DO and Chiro if it looks like a possibility.  Peace and good health.

Nerve pain: Stenosis refers to crowding and/or impingement of the nerves or spinal cord - therefore the most common symptoms would be nerve type symptoms in the arms, such as numbness, tingling, weakness, pain.  Having said that, it's very uncommon for an 18 year old to have cervical stenosis.

Yes: In all truth, cervical spine stenosis can cause significant weakness and even paralysis if left alone and injury ensues.
This could cause enough difficulty to result in other problems with your health that could contribute to death.  While that is the most extreme of possibilities, it is possible.  My best recommendation is that you treat this like an impending heart problem. Act early.
