Opioid pain reliever: OxyContin is a long-acting opioid pain reliever with dosing at 8-12 hrs instead of 4-6 hrs like most other opioid meds. It can, unfortunately, be more easily abused than some &amp; was thus the subject of some controversy a few yrs back, but I find it is an excellent medication for those w/ severe or long-term chronic pain.

Good question!: Oxycontin is a very potent opiate (narcotic) pain killer. For the right reason it provides excellent pain relief but it has a very high abuse potential and hence is labeled as "bad". A certain portion of this drug is released fast and hence gives the "buzz" to someone abusing it and hence is addictive. Sometimes doctors don't know how to handle pain and resort to more and more potent meds.

Immediate vs Extend: Oxycodone immediate release (roxicodone (oxycodone) and oxyceta) is short acting and used for breakthrough pain. Oxycodone controlled release (oxycontin) is longer acting and it works over many hours. The exact dosage of this controlled substance needs to be determined by the prescriber.

Oxycontin: You can only get Oxycontin from the pharmacy if your doctor has prescribed this for you.
As far as I know it is not an over-the-counter medicine.

Quit oxycontin: Decrease the dose and frequency of use over time. The best is to gradually get off, make changes every 1-2 weeks until you are totally off.

Work for what??: If you are taking it properly - swallowed whole as directed - it gets the same serum drug levels as any other form of oxycodone.  If you are tampering with it in an effort to snort or inject it, it turns into a gel and inactivates the oxycodone. Opioids do not work for all kinds of pain (neuropathy is particularly resistant), and it depends on the dose prescribed. Talk to prescriber or pharmacist.

Oxycontin high: You do not want to take yourself down this pathway of destruction. Surround yourself with others who have no interest in this behavior. (Including support groups through your local behavioral health organizations)  Unintentional overdose from drugs like oxycontin is HIGH especially in YOUR age group (higher if you are a male). Don't want you being part of the statistics!

Seek help: It is not intended for snorting obviously. You should seek help asap if you are doing so. Side effects can come form the active ingredient and form the inactive ones.
