From a doctor: Oxycontin is an opioid medication that is a controlled substance. It is followed by a REMS (Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy) program due to its potential for abuse and to cause serious harm. For these reasons, it’s available only by prescription, and you need to fill it at a pharmacy under strict federal and state regulations.
