A Dynamic study.: You should expect to drink a suspension of barium sulfate (sometimes flavored) and you will be asked to move to certain positions in order to obtain the best possible pictures of the esophagus, stomach, duodenum and small bowel, depending on which body parts your doctor wants evaluated. For a barium enema the contrast is inserted through a rectal tube and the colon is evaluated.

Not so bad: Normally, you will be asked to change into a gown but keep your bra and panties on. They'll check hearing and vision, check your lungs/heart, abdomen, reflexes, spine, ears, eyes, nose and throat and they might check you for a femoral hernia by asking you to cough while placing a hand where the thigh meets the lower abdomen, both sides. Realize, the exam is a natural procedure that is done for the assurance of your good health. If you have a good, kind, gentle, and compassionate Dr., they will know it is your first exam. A small speculum can be used with lubrication to do the exam without pain
