Try making a journal of the times when you want to do it, what's going on at the time, etc. Look for any patterns that might help you determine the cause. Either way it is important to stop the behavior as it can damage your teeth over time. Short term counseling may help stop.

Function!: All of us at times want something "badly". How we get it, or how we try to get it and don't succeed but keep trying- no matter the cost in time, money and any destruction it causes to our lives-is the difference. Generally compulsions carried to extremes drive us to do the same thing again and again and expect the results to change. That's a malfunction!

One begins to obsess (thoughts) and compulsively behave in a futile effort to bring life into control.  There can also be a neurological component to the process. Learning new things can be wonderful.  If that robs someone of inner freedom, harms relationships or job performance than seek professional support.

Is he in treatment?: Is he doing all he can to control the ocd? Does his behavior bother you? Only you can decide if it is something you should be concerned about. It is a difficult condition to overcome, but only you can decide if it interferes with your relationship with him.

Any excessive: thinking (obsession) or behaviors (compulsions) that interfere w/function or comfort in life could be considered negative.  "Positive addictions" is a term coined by Wm. Glasser, MD, and has to do w/behaviors we enjoy that are non competitive (even w/oneself).  These can include, running, sports, paying an instrument, etc. A mental health pro can help, not drugs only.  Peace and good health.

i have a history of anxiety but recently out of the blue while driving i began imagining thoughts of my car veering of a bridge or cliff worse i felt a strong compulsion to do it but not do it at the same time. i am scared i might do it?
