(3) consider a self-help group like alcohol anonymous.

Environment: if everyone around you drinks, if drinking is considered respectable or expected, if you have lots of stress or emotional problems, or you self-medicate w/ alcohol, you are more likely to drink excessively.  Longer habits become stronger.

Very common: It is the fastest raising population of abusers. Unfortunately, very common. About 50% of my patients are teenagers. The parents often have no idea. The biggest problem is that teenagers feel, which is unfortunately age-appropriate, that nothing bad will happen to them. Seeing their pears in troubles or even dying does not help. Find a psychiatrist who worked with teenagers, not just with addictio.

When this is all is place, approach the individual with your concerns, and a plan.  All of this can be turned around and stabilized with appropriate team approach.

Med eval/ AA/ ALANON: You can attend alanon where you can learn about alcoholism and you can find out areas that you can influence and areas that you can't. You can also encourage your loved one to attend an aa (alcoholic anonymous meeting) and/ or see his physician to have this evaluated.

AA: The first place to start is with Alcoholics Anonymous.  Go to www.aa.org and locate a meeting in your area.  Then GO to a meeting and talk to all the alcoholics there who are winning the battle against their addiction.  Listen to what they say and do what they suggest.  You may need to go to a detox and/or rehab center but start with AA.  Good luck!
