is it possible to have tooth abscess but have no lump on the gums?

Abcess: Yes. Sometimes the infection will drain towards the gums and create the "bump" you referred to.  Other times the infection stays in the jawbone and does not drain to the outside.

Painful Lump: See your dentist asap as this sounds like a tooth that is abscessing; you do not want to leave an infection untreated. It can be easily treated with a root canal. If your dentist determines that it is not tooth related then referral to a specialist is in order.

Two thoughts: Either an infection or a mucocele. It doesn't make sense to take any chances. See a dentist to know for sure. If it is an infection, even though it doesn't hurt now, it will soon enough and usually at the most inopportune time. If it's a mucocele, all the better. When was your last dental check-up?

Best to be : Evaluated by a dentist.  Once an exam and appropriate x-rays are taken a more definitive diagnosis and aporopriate treatment recomnendations can be rendered.  Hope this helps.

The sructures in: This area include the parotid gland and lymph nodes. Infection in the gland is a possibility especially if it increases in size when you eat. See an ent.

It'll take a while: Sounds like it was a severe infection.  It will take 4-6 weeks for swelling to go down. Pain should go down by the end of antibiotics. If it doesn't then a scan to see if infection is still trapped in sinus cavity is a good step.

Probable infection: It sounds like an active infection is present.  I recommend you have your treating dentist evaluate the tooth for possible root canal involvement, root fracture or periodontal involvement.  Treatment to resolve the swelling should precede further restorative therapy.
