Narcotics/Neurologic: For several reasons some people have severe chronic pain who need narcotic pain meds and nerve stabilizing or neurologic meds like Neurontin and lyrica (pregabalin). For chronic pain issues your primary care physician will advise you and is a good practice if seen by a pain management specialist. Several types of meds taken orally including long acting, or patches transdermally  as out patient.

what are the negative effects of remaining on low dosage, long-term pain medication such as tramadol for moderate to severe chronic pain?

See below: The problem is that one may be maintaining a opioid physical tolerance.  If using the short acting forms of tramadol , one might be having mild withdrawal at the end of the dosing interval with magnification of pain, irritability, and depression among other issues.  There is less of a problem of using the er form.

Yes: I am a big fan of behavioral modification.  Many chronic pain patients can adequately manage their pain with counseling regarding biofeedback and coping techniques.  
Pain medications should always be the last step in managing chronic pain.  Interventional pain management techniques are also an option.  There non-narcotics meds as well that may be helpful.

Any specific group?: There are many different chronic pain medicines, and each one has advantages, side effects and risks. Some types of pain respond better to certain medicines than others. Any specific group (TCA, AED, Opioids)?

Bonine: Bonine can relieve nausea and it may cause sedation as can pain medications. Just be aware of this possible interaction and you'd be advised not to drive, operate dangerous machinery,climb heights,etc if you take this combination of medications. Your pharmacist can also answer questions about your medications.

It is normal: Opioids just make some people feel that way. Much like alcohol, it's dehydration that causes most of the opiate hangover symptoms. They opioids have serious side effects if you don't use them correctly. Ask your physician for more information.

Getting off narcs?: Chronic pain patients work with their doctor to get off of narcotics by using physical therapies,  meditation, acupuncture, stress reduction and serotonin meds.  Chronic narcotic patients need to follow rules like coming in on schedule for refills, not calling for early refills or dropping their meds in the toilet.etc  If your doctor's plan is to get you off narcs but you want refills.... angst.

Herbs: Medicinal cannabis if it is legal in your state is an alternative to narcotic pain medications.  Also eating a more alkaline diet my help.  Acupuncture. Deep meditation.  There are various herbs but this is not my specialty.  Recommend following up with a pain management specialist and/or homeopathic specialist.  There are also doctors of natural medicine possibly in your area.

Unfortunately: The current climate of the profession is making it difficult to find doctor's that are willing to treat chronic pain.  Even if you find a pain management doctor, he or she may be unwilling to prescribe your medications.  Try finding a localgeneral practice or internal medicine doctor.  Have your medical records with you. If your condition warrents the meds, you should be ok.

what are some non narcotic prescription medications that i suggest to my doctor for chronic pain control?

Prescriptions: Never a good idea to suggest any particular medication to your doctor. Majority of doctors do not do well with this. 
Best is to ask the question "i really do not want to take opioid medication for the pain , what non opioid medications can you suggest?".
