hello doctor im 27 years old i had diarrhea black stool last week for one day. i went to ed they said it was blood. ct abdomen and pelvic was normal. im scared, what could this be? my hemoglobin level dropped due to bleeding 11.2. im healthy man?

: Follow up with gastroenterologist will be needed. Stop taking any over the counter meds or supplements. The source of the bleeding needs to be determined in the gastrointestinal system with upper and lower endoscopies.

No: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, your hemoglobin is lower than normal, even for a female. If you are in your reproductive years, it may be due to menstrual blood loss. You may take oral iron and multivitamins and see your doctor for an evaluation.

This is serious: A workup to find the cause of your anemia should have begun when your hemoglobin was found to be 11. There are lots of causes of anemia. The cause needs to be found. For example, I wouldn't want your bleeding stomach ulcer to be recognized only after massive bleeding has led to a trip to the operating room.

Varies a little: Your lab might use different "normal", but in general: 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dl = hemoglobin for adult females. If you have chronic diseases (kidney probs, diabetes, etc.), then you should discuss w/your dr, otherwise, iron-rich foods like dark greens (spinach) and red meat (in moderation) are two obvious answers. Multivitamin w/iron (or prenatal vit) can also help. If still low after 3-4 wks, see ur dr.

Erectile dysfunction: I see your main concern is erectile dysfunction at age 30. I am going to assume this is actually hemoglobin a1c levels; your blood hemoglobin is measured in different units. Your level is in the reference range and this rules out diabetes as the cause of your erectile dysfunction. Two causes that are often missed by physicians are prolactinoma ; hemochromatosis. Continue the workup, good luck.

That's fine: That hemoglobin is perfectly normal for a man. And reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either side.

No: If everything else is normal, the slightly low Hemoglobin &amp; Hematocrit  suggest mild anemia which can often be due to mild chronic blood loss such as from long heavy periods
