Talk to your doctor: The presence of nitrites just means there are bacteria in your urine that make that metabolite; it needs to be interpreted in the setting of symptoms and white blood cells in the urine, and if all are appropriate, needs antibiotics.  All roads lead to discussion with the doctor.

What is the question: These are lab tests, the results of which cannot be interpreted outside the context of your clinical condition. You can have leukocytes in your urine without having a bacterial infection with an organism that converts nitrates to nitrites.

Maybe: Leukocytes (white blood cells) are found in urine when there is any source of irritation (uti, stones, tumors...).  Nitrites in urine are generally due to bacteria that make nitrites, but not all bacteria do so.  The only way to be sure you have a UTI (and know how best to treat it) is to have the urine cultured, which means it is grown in a lab for 48-72hrs, then tested with several antibiotics.

Possible: Not all UTIs give positive nitrite.Leukocytes could be present if urine not very cleanly collected in female(by wiping very well with antiseptic pad &amp;labia separated).Only sure proof of infection is culture.If you did a dipstick test at home,I presume you are having symptoms. Best to see doctor &amp; probably you will be given antibiotic probably after giving urine specimen.

i discovered about 6 months ago that i have symptomless uti's so i got some uti test trips recently. i took the test and have tested 2 days in a row positive (500+) for leukocytes, but negative thus far for nitrites. should i go to a dr now or wait?

Some basics: A typical squat &amp; pee will create a sample that includes a vaginal wash out. This may include vaginal leukocytes that do not mean a UTI. Nitrites are the chemicals created by the more common causes of UTI's &amp; more predictive of a true infection. Testing a fresh mid stream sample after cleaning the site is better.I would clarify when to call with the doc who treats you based on their case knowledge

It's a maybe: White blood cells (leukocytes) can be present without nitrites with an infection, or maybe there are white blood cells present for another reason.  This is a time when you should see a doctor so they can look at the urine in a microscope and possibly culture the urine to see if there really is an infection.  Good luck.

Wrong drug: call your physician. amoxicillin is not a drug of choice for uti.

Bacteria reduce NO3: These are lab findings on a urine test- and what needs to happen is for your doctor to interpret the test in the clinical setting. Specifically, I would want to 'match up' any urinary symptoms you have, with the urinary findings. A very important element of the urinalysis is whether you have white cells (WBCs) present or not. A few are allowed, but more than 5 and I would pay attention.
