my smart watch records my heart rate sometimes as low as 52bpm at rest. my average resting heart rate for today was 56bpm. is this too low? i am not an athlete and this seems low my bp is good usually around 115/75?

: A heart rate of 52-56/min can be normal if, when standing, there is no dizziness, and if one's heart rate increases with walking or during other exertion.  If exertion is well tolerated, the low resting heart rate is probably normal.

: It is congenital, i.e. you are born with it, not a hereditary condition which is genetic. Human body has 2 opposed autonomic systems which are sympathetic and parasympathetic. If your sympathetic system is dominant, your heart rate will be on the high side. That is probably the reason why the normal HR range is relatively wide, 60 -100, the middle point is 80 so you are in the sympathetic side.

Normal vs Abnormal: In normal adults a resting heart rate of 60-80 is common.  Deconditioning can lead to faster rates while conditioned athletes can have heart rates in the 40-60 range.  Olympic sports athletes may have heart rates in the 30's.

Rapid heart rate: Rapid resting heart rate (over 90) is seen with fever, anxiety, overactive thyroid, caffeine,alcohol,nicotine use, certain medications like Sudafed or stimulants. The average athlete's resting heart rate is in the 50-60 range. A cardiac evaluation as well as thyroid,blood pressure levels, EKG, echocardiogram, outpatient heart monitor test,treadmill stress test may be scheduled.

No: That is too fast a resting heart rate for anyone except an infant. Causes of rapid resting rates are overactive thyroid or other endocrinopathies.fevers, anxiety, caffeine,alcohol,nicotine,certain medications containing adrenalin like substances. Your physician will take a thorough history, examine you and order appropriate tests. Referral to a cardiologist may be advised.

Variable = normal: Heart rate is variable throughout the day, your life and in many different situations.  There is no such thing as a static normal heart rate.  Normal exists as a range depending on what activities you have engaged in.  Emotions, physical activity and diet can influence your heart rate throughout the day.

Heart rate: Though the textbook definition of bradycardia (slow HR) is &lt; 60, young people &amp; athletes often have a HR much slower than this at rest. Yes: some people can have normal lower resting heart rate.  The problem is if you have symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, syncope along with these low heart rates.  Additionally, some medications can also decrease you are heart rate such as beta blockers.   If you asymptomatic then nothing to worry about.

Endurance: It could but it is completely normal for athletes of endurance sports
