please tell me what does a lung nodule indicate?

Lung nodule: Lung nodules are densities in the lungs seen in imaging procedures. The indication depends on how they look like, calcified or not, cavitary or not. They can be scars, old granuloma, localized infection (benign ones) or they can be cancers. That is why when we see them we are aggressive in working them up to make sure they are diagnosed early as if cancer, best treatment is removal if not spread.

Lung nodule: Short term follow up is recommended ( every 6 months) for up to 2 years. If it increases in size then a pet scan and possible biopsy can be performed.

Inflamation, etc: Benign nodules are often the result of abnormal tissue, inflammation and/or scar. This can result from inhaling something or having an infection.

Lung cancer: It would take longer than a few years of smoking to get lung cancer.  But you can get cancer at any age and sometimes the cancer will spread into the lungs.

Depends: Depends on what the nodule is? First you need appropriate diagnosis.  This is best by a multidiscipline comprehensive thoracic surgical lung nodule program. If the nodule is a tumor, treatment will depend on type and staging if malignant.

Get it TNM staged.: If there is a lung nodule, and it appears solitary, it still needs to be evaluated to see if there is no metastasis, etc..  Ct scan and an ENT (ears, nose, and throat) exam are done.  The ct helps determine if there is lymph node involvement.  An aspiration biopsy of the lesion can be taken to determine its histology.  Surgical resection in localized cases is done for all types except small cell.

Lung Nodule: A solitary lung nodule must be followed closely or evaluated by biopsy or surgery as determined by your doctor, regardless of location in the lung.

No symptoms: Lung nodules have no symptoms, unfortunately. Most of the time, they are benign things like scars, but sometimes they can be early cancers. If you have a nodule found on a cat scan, they need to be followed to make sure they don't grow or change over time. This is especially true if you have risk factors for cancer such as smoking or radiation exposure.

Changes or biopsy: Lung nodules that are small and not worrisome looking(as in spiculated edges, growth, large size, newly developed, etc...) can be observed over 3-6 months with another ct scan for comparison. If no change then likely benign. If something is growing or larger than 2cm or ugly looking by a radiologist then it could b. Malignant. Biopsy is the way to know. If it is too small biopsy may not possible.
