Nerve root: Radiculopathy means abnormal function of a nerve root, such as coming from neck or lower back.  Poly- refers to multiple levels.  The term may be associated with stenosis or narrowing at certain areas of the spine, but also, if multiple herniated discs are present.

Nerves: Peripheral nerve is involvement of one nerve in body. Polyradiculopathy is diffuse nerve root involvement such as Diabetes, Myelopathy is Spinal cord involvement.

i recently had an abnormal emg showing moderately severe, chronic l5 polyradiculpathies bilaterally; but normal ncs after suffering l4-5 & l5-s1 disc herniations almost 4 years ago. why would the emg be abnormal, but ncs be normal?

: This is not the forum to teach you how to interpret EMGs, but rather to state that the needle electrode portion demonstrated abnormalities consistent with chronic bilateral pinched nerves in the lower back.  Since the electrical shock portion (NCS) does not directly test the nerve roots, it was found to be normal.  No discrepancies here.  Discuss with your doctors.
