: If you suffer migraine headaches, and are in the 10-15% of migraineurs with food sensitivity reactions, the red wine is more commonly the headache trigger.  But alcohol itself can be the trigger in some.  Perhaps the worst offender is nitrite preservatives in cold cuts.

It can.: If you have a reaction to the sulfites (red wine) you may have a headache. If you drink too much (as with any alcohol) you may experience a headache.

Any kind: Red wines are not an infrequent cause  but it is very personal and there is no general rule about any of the numerous trigger factors in migraine.

why would wine give me an instant headache after just a few sips? i drink wine occasionally, socially, but this does not happen every time, it only happened with one specific wine. do some wines have higher chemical content that cause this reaction?

: What is your ethnicity? Some ethnic groups -- especially East Asian (Japanese, Korean, etc) -- have a genetic mutation that reduces alcohol tolerance. Occurring some times but not others may be related to other factors, like food intake. If this applies to you, it's probably the alcohol, not other chemicals in the wine. Non-Asians can have a similar tendency. Discuss with your doctor. Good luck.

Liver processing: Alcohol is processed in the liver, and it depends on a particular liver enzyme. If that enzyme is deficient, or your liver is impaired for some reason, alcohol can have a bad effect on you.

i drink 2-3 liters of water a day. why do i get congested when i drink wine or have a cocktail? i cant be dehydrated. it causes the headache.

Not hydration issue: There are some people who react to the various chemical compounds in wine or cocktails in unusual ways. If this happens every time it is likely your unusual response, as if it were an allergy (but its not). I would write down all your experiences with this &amp; take it in for a doc visit &amp; maybe they can sort it out/give you a list of alternatives to your present drinking pattern.

good day. i sometimes wake up with a stabbing headache back right side of my head above the ear. it feels like an ice pick is embedded deep. it's more certain if i've had wine or beer the night before. what is the likely reason?

: Red wines are more apt to cause headaches. They contain more tannins than white wines. Tannins can increase serotonin in high enough levels to trigger headaches including migraine. Some red wines,like Merlot, have low tannin levels  Some think it's the histamine in red grapes that is another cause of red wine induced headaches.  Of course many people don't get headaches from drinking red wine.

Everyone's different: Headache from wine is suspected to be caused by histamine and tyramine in wine. Histamine can dilate blood vessels and tyramine can raise blood pressure which can lead to headaches. Some people seem less able to metabolize these two chemicals or are more sensitive to their effects.

what can you do for a headache from too much wine?

Hangover or migraine: Some migraine pts are sensitive to red wine, as just one food item that may provoke headaches.  A hangover from too much alcohol is a different issue, and may need rehydration, antinausea approaches, etc. Your wine rxtn may be different with white wines, or even roses, and some european wines may be better tolerated than american due to different chemical makeups.
