can cold food cause a migraine?

Not usually: However, it is often very characteristic of pts with migraine to suffer "brainfreeze" after swallowing cold foods, such as ice cream.  This phenomena causes brief pain btwn the eyes which resolves over a few minutes.  Many migraineurs have avoided rapid ingestion of cold items due to this.  Full blown headaches assoc with cold are far less common.

monosodium glutamate (msg)
aspartame (nutrasweet)
caffeine
nuts
nitrites, nitrates

caffeine can sometimes prevent or ameliorate a migraine.

Migraine: There are no specific foods that  are related to migraines. Alcohol, smoking and tobacco use should be avoided. If you discover what triggers the migraines, then avoid that food or activity. See your local doctor for best advice.

The : The best way to figure out your triggers is to keep a headache journal.  One can be found at www.Headache.Org.  (this is a really good website for information as well).  Most common food triggers are msg, artificial sweeteners, alcohol.  Some people find that a certain smell, cigarette smoking can trigger their headaches.  Writing things down on the journal can help clarify it for you.  Recently, studies have found that magnesium supplementation can help with headaches.  Please talk to your doctor before starting it though.

The trigger : A variety of external and internal factors can trigger a migraine attack in certain individuals who may have a genetic or neurochemical predisposition to migraine.
In approximately 10% of migraineurs, food can trigger an attack. (cheese, alcohol (particularly red wine), chocolate, foods containing msg, sugar and sugar substitute used in equal, just to name a few).

i just had a bout of food poisoning and suffered bad migraine headaches, could those headaches be caused by the food poisoning?

Yes: Food poisoning can release a lot of toxins into the body. The mechanism is inflammation of the gut which can make the gut lining "leaky" allowing those toxins into the body. Gut health is the source of overall health - if your gut is inflammed so will be your body - rashes, joint pains, headaches, fibromyalgia, etc. Start a good probiotic like florajen 2 x daily to rebuild your healthy gut flora!

Not : Not all headaches that lead to vomiting are migraine headaches. I recommend that you make an appointment with a neurologist for an evaluation of your headaches. He or she will be able to determine if these are migraine headaches and if not; what type they are. If migraine; you doctor will be able to diagnose which type of migraine and then help you with a treatment plan. You and your doctor will likely first make a decision between preventive and abortive medications.

i know topamax (topiramate) for migraine also works as appetite suppressant, but what is the chemical reason? does metabolism change or just taste for foods/amts?
