Do some research: Sadly, there are long term risks for heroin babies but it seems that the problems are worst at the very beginning of life. If you have had a reasonably healthy infancy and childhood you probably escaped the threat. That's great! but you can find and read information or talk with a knowledgeable doctor. Difficult to say: Heroin use in the first trimester will either cause a full miscarriage or have minimal effects at all.  This is essentially true of all toxic exposures in the first trimester that tend to kill the baby or not affect it at all.  Heroin use for the rest of the pregnancy will likely cause addiction in the baby, stunted growth and increase risk of infections such as hepatitis, hiv, syphilis.

Yes: Neonatal abstinence syndrome occurs in about 60 to 80 percent of heroin-exposed infants. Its onset is usually within 72 hours of birth, with a high mortality if the syndrome is severe and untreated.  Premature infants have been reported to show a less severe abstinence syndrome following opiate exposure.

Maybe: The baby will certainly do better than being on heroin through delivery with a guaranteed withdrawal syndrome.

See below: Cps will want to make sure that your children are in the safest environment for them. If they are already involved you are going to have to prove to them that you are a fit mother. This may take some work. Good luck.

After detox: They will develop normally.   Unfortunately,  they often start with disadvantages and don't catch up.  What is of concern is increased tendency to addiction when older.

i am 31 wks pregnant. i used 2 bags of heroin iv once daily for last month but have now stopped. will it be detected in baby at birth?

If they look-yes: If you are on a watch list from child services or give the authorities any reason to suspect drug use, traces of the drugs will be found in the baby. Stopping now will at least reduce the risk baby would have an extended hospital stay from drug withdrawal.

i used heroin for the first 8 weeks of pregnancy.once i found out i took suboxone for 10 days starting at 8mg a day, then to 4mg, then to 2mg to 0. i've taken prenatal the entire time, stayed in bed and eating. healthy. will i have healthy baby?

Heroin use during: pregnancy. Don't know how far along you are at this point.  Don't know if your ultrasounds &amp; other tests have been normal. Your obstetricain should have all of that information and be in the best position to answer this question.
