Purplish: Since the varicosity is filled with venous blood, it usually has a purplish color and unless it's clotted, it is painless and nontender. The shape may be circular,curly or like a tiny tube or bubble and usually doesn't change in size.

Bugs Crawling: Varicose veins can be painful and can include swelling, leg heaviness and leg fatigue.  Patients often complain of odd sensations including leg cramps and a crawling sensation.  Be sure to visit a vascular surgeon to have your varicose veins fully evaluated.  You'll want to get a venous duplex.

A range: They range in size from 0.1 mm to as much as 2 cm or more in size.  Spider veins vary in color based on where they are in the skin.  The brightest red ones sit on top of the skin.  The deeper they are in the skin, the bluer they become.  As they become larger and greener, they are called reticular veins.  The are under the skin.  Larger and squigglier veins are varicose veins.

Veins: Varicose veins represent faulty valves and pooling of blood. If they are persisting I would recommend an exam by your physician to be certain that you are not a high risk for blood clots.

State of the art.: Varicose vein treatment is an office based procedure (private clinic) and usually no longer done either in a hospital or ambulatory care center.  The procedure is performed under tumescent anesthesia which is a very dilute local anesthesia and sometimes an oral sedative is given.  The procedure is done with a laser, radio frequency or rotating catheter and has minimum discomfort and downtime.

Can be: If you have longstanding, untreated varicose veins and complications that we call chronic venous insufficiency, you can develop a venous leg ulcer from that.  Although not usually even potentially dangerous, unless they become infected (which is rare), they can be very difficult to deal with.  Phlebitis is more common in varicose veins and it is possible to get a deep vein thrombus from that.

Options: Depending on the size of the varicose veins, you could try butchers broom or horse chestnut supplements, or may need to see a vascular surgeon for treatment.  There are some laser treatments, but not sure you'd be a candidate without evaluation. Best bet is to see vascular surgeon.
