Screening tests.: Vdrl (venerial disease research laboratory) tests against anti-cardiolipin antibodies and RPR (papid plasma reagin) tests against nonspecific antibodies suggestive of syphilis and are screening tests.  Treponemal antibody tests, like fta-abs and mha-tp usually become positive two to five weeks after the initial infection.  These are used to confirm syphilis and stay positive, even after therapy.

i have tested as below 1. rpr 58 days, 82 days, 105 days. rapid test syphilis at 90 days, 95 days & 105 days . vdrl test 95 days & 105 days all test is negative ? will it turn to positive if i will test at 120 days ? are those test conclusive?

Antibodies: Ok..Lets separate these first. The venereal disease research laboratory test or vdrl is a blood test for syphilis and was developed by the former venereal disease research laboratory.  Rapid plasma reagin (rpr) refers to a type of test that looks for non-specific antibodies in the blood of the patient that may indicate that the organism (treponema pallidum) that causes syphilis is present.

i was diagnosed with syphilis 09.2016(rpr 4+, vdrl-). i made new tests and my vdrl is possitive and my blood tests are 3+ again (rpr, vdrl). is it normal? did i cure my syphilis?

RPR and VDRL tests: These tests detect antibodies to the causative agent in syphilis, and even after appropriate treatment, the tests remain positive sometimes for weeks.  Get repeat testing in another month, and the amount of antibodies should decrease.

Accepted Answer

Both are good: Both are good accurate tests. Most labs start with the inexpensive RPR as a screening test and the do an FTABS if positive. Some labs go straight for VDRL or FTABS. Either way is fine. Both work great.

if you tested negative on a syphilis rpr lab test at 14 weeks. and a syphilis antibody lab test at 8, 12 and 14 weeks, would you also test negative on a vdrl test at 20 weeks? taking a medical visa test soon, just anxious about it?

: You have been over tested. You do not have syphilis. You don't need another test. If wherever you're traveling requires syphilis testing with a visa application, you can be sure of a negative result. Don't worry about it.

: I would check the exact test  (there several) you had and then go to CDC.gov for details for the exact test(s) you have had.
