Just like regular MD: Osteopaths are covered by almost all medical insurance plans. They participate in all specialties in medicine.

Historically, there was a bigger difference than there is today.

Accepted Answer

Possibly: All osteopathic physicians are trained in standard medicine. "herbs and natural remedies" are not part of their medical curriculum, and any claimed expertise in this area is entirely outside the realm of a standard physician's education. Having said that, there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that dos on average prescribe fewer medications than mds.

Yes: I am a pediatrician and osteopathic physician.  I never thought i would use it...Now i incorporate it into my practice daily; parents love how I use it in practice that i end up seeing the whole family. The musculoskeletal, mechanical body, the structure is so important in daily functioning.  I was treated for my sinuses/allergies and neck pain from scoliosis; my colicky infant was treated too.

I "quote" from a DO: An osteopath (do) brings a different perspective than md's, who usually rely on xrays, mri's, meds & injections. A do trained in hands-on diagnosis & manipulation might find things overlooked by others. Quite different: Us osteopathic physicians are licensed for the full scope of medicine and surgery.  Also trained in manipulative manual treatment, including cranial-sacral work.   More holistic than md; generally not trained to use herbs which is naturopaths realm.

It is used by osteopathic physicians in conjuction with other tools of modern medicine (prescription medicine, surgery, etc.).

Absolutely not.: Early osteopaths from around the time of that profession's founding in the late 1800s purportedly advertised themselves as being able to cure cancer just by osteopathic manipulations. There is absolutely no evidence to support this and you should really consult with a board-certified oncologist to discuss a proper treatment plan. Anyone who tells you otherwise does not have your interests in mind.

Perspective: The difference between mds (allopathic) and dos (osteopathic) is a matter of opinion. There are those who believe there's no practical difference. Mds & dos practice the same medicine & surgery and train in the same hospitals sometimes. Then there are those who tout the do's "holistic" approach which, having worked alongside dos for 10 years now, I have yet to see. There is no difference.

Yes: Osteopaths don't do much manipulation now. Most of them are excellent doctors.
