Perspective: The difference between mds (allopathic) and dos (osteopathic) is a matter of opinion. There are those who believe there's no practical difference. Mds & dos practice the same medicine & surgery and train in the same hospitals sometimes. Then there are those who tout the do's "holistic" approach which, having worked alongside dos for 10 years now, I have yet to see. There is no difference.

OMT: Doctors of Osteopathic medicine in the US have very similar training to those of Allopathic medicine, in that they take the same courses and have same certifications and qualifications, but also take additional classes in Osteopathic Manupulative Treatment (also known as OMT). This treatment allows D.O.'s to treat some conditions with their hands and they are also taught to think more holistically

Osteopathic Medicine: I am a proud osteopathic medicine physician, and in the past I was never always that way. But the benefits of being an osteopathic family physician are many. I honestly do look at the person as an individual, and my manual manipulation skills allow me to have a better sense of knowing the patient and their overall health through touch and feel. It is too bad I have no more space.
