i had ultrasound on jugulodigastric lymph node that measured 1.8 x 0.8 x 3.6 cm but then i had a ct scan that said "no lymphadenopathy"  why is this?

Accepted Answer

Yes you do: Less than 1.5 cm is by convention not enlarged, assuming CT was done on neck scanning your jugulogastric node area. The question next is how to verify and what to do, best to check with oncologist in your area, and moffitt cancer center is near you, so pls take advantage of these resource to get to the bottom of your concern.

my father has metastatic melanoma, 1 lymph node involvement. pet scan and ct scan shows no other metastasis at this time.  does this mean he is cured?

I am sorry... : To hear about your father. Melanoma is a horribly unpredictable cancer. It can show up six months or six years after the original treatment and can be literally anywhere in the body. Unfortunately there are no studies that can show microscopic disease. I advise  my cancer patients to give their immune system the best chance to do its job by eating healthy,  getting enough sleep, and  stay fit.

Question 3

ct scan (for kidney stone) showed enlarged spleen,enlarged para-aortic lymph node, & diffusely hypodense liver-no lesions. what can this mean?

Accepted Answer

Unless you have: had a recent illness(e.g. mononucleosis) that could explain those findings, unfortunately the main concern for splenomegaly and adenopathy would be lymphoma.  Please talk to your doc about the results and next steps.

hi i have cirrhosis of the liver and they found something in a cat scan, portocaval lymph node measures 2.5, what does this mean , is it cancer????

Maybe: It's also not uncommon just have a big benign node here. With no nearby tumors seen, the node is unlikely to be malignant.

Question 5

can a ct scan detect lymphoma? i know it cannot tell you what type you have, but can a ct scan with contrast tell you if your lymph nodes are malignant or if you have lymphoma?

: I answered this question before. Node biopsy or resection for pathology has to be done for the diagnosis of malignant node or lymphoma. Along with other clinical symptoms, signs and laboratory results, CT findings may suggest the diagnosis of lymphoma but it is not conclusive without pathology.

had hodgkins lymphoma 5 years ago  just recently started feeling bad. just had ct scan of my lungs where they found some lymph  nodes.  is it possibl e  the cancer has come back.?

Possible need workup: Remarkable progress has been  made in treating hodgkins lymphoma, with chemotherapy, unfortunately could recur in few, need work  up pet scan and possible biopsy to rule out recurrence.Talk to your oncologist.

would a ct scan of a neck lymph node determine whether further tests are needed or not?  can it tell if the cause is of benign nature?

Accepted Answer

Maybe: There are lymph nodes that are clearly normal on ct, some which are clearly abnormal, and an entire spectrum in between.  If it is not clear, usually a follow up study is recommended as lymph nodes which are abnormal because of infection typically shrink after some time.

i had a ct scan. it shows that my perirectal lymph node is enlarged at a 9mm. i've had pain for over a year . the pain feels like its in my buttox .

Would suggest : That you get a colonoscopy to start with.  With pain in that region and an enlarged node, you need to exclude rectal cancer.

i am 35 & was informed on a ct scan that i have a periaortic 13mm lymph node & 6mm "low density" lesion that they are saying is a cyst. i had 2 ct scans 5 months apart & the node remained the same size. am i going to die? i am freaking out?

: Bad news. We are all going to die someday.  ;-). Dr. humor.   But I do not have enough information to make any projections for you.  Only your Drs can do this. But remember as Yoggi Berra Said:  It is difficult to make predictions, especially about the future. Cysts almost never kill. But discuss with your team again who have the data to help with such projections.

how can a ct scan show if a lymph node is cancerous or not?

CT , nodes and CA: CT shows anatomy. Lymph nodes usually don't show up or are very small. When the radiologist can see and measure a lymph node it than becomes suspicious for cancer. If it is greatly enlarged than it is more likely to be Cancer. A PET scan will show if the lymph node is active ie growing faster than normal tissue. If there is a doubt a biopsy can be done. All scans have a resolution of size dectable
