It is Normal.: What he is getting is called "localized reaction", which is quite common, this is not true allergic reaction.

Large local reaction: Some kids seem to go through a phase where mosquito bites get bigger and bigger - large red, hard, itchy knots that last for days. With time they grow out of them. This is not anaphylaxis or worrisome.  There are reports in the literature of military recruits in basic training getting sick from literally hundreds of mosquito bites, but that's the exception that proves the rule! Use steroid cream.

Do not jump to conclusions just because you've been bitten a few times. The great probability is that you will not contract west nile virus.

Join the club: Many (most) people are "allergic" to mosquito bites - some just have a more pronounced reaction than others. It is not unusual for me to get a reaction the size of a baseball when one gets me on the leg. It's a local reaction of histamine release. Cool compresses can help. Topical "anti-itch" treatments are generally not real helpful. Oral anti-histamines such as Diphenhydramine (benadryl) helpful.

Insect bite: No mosquitoes in NY? Nonsense! They're everywhere -- every state, every town, every neighborhood. Or perhaps you're being bitten by something else. In any case, try an insect repellent and see if it prevents the problem.

Delayed reaction: You may indeed have a delayed reaction from a bug bite. Try topical hydrocortisone cream on it and see if this helps. If there is any pus, tenderness, worsening in swelling, see your doctor.

Usually just bitten: A person can notice a mosquito bite right away, or within a few minutes. If she is asleep, it may take longer to notice. If bitten while sleeping, she should notice the bite upon waking up. A new mosquito bite should be visibly growing in size on the skin surface during the first couple of hours.
