Dry socket: This actually occurs infrequently, especially if you follow your dentist's post operative instructions. Most patients can't actually see well enough into the socket to evaluate proper blood clot formation. Rather than seeing it, you will be in severe pain 2-4 days following the extraction. See your dentist NOW: Dry sockets are treated with iodoform gauze on a daily basis until the tissue granulates in to protect the raw exposed bone. In my experience it can take up to two weeks for the tissue to granulate in so that the gauze is not needed. Please see your dentist/os to prevent other problems.

Exposed bone: Dry socket is the very painful condition where the healing blood clot is lost and the bone is exposed to the environment.  So initially it will look like an empty hole.  Many times you can see the bone.  As it is healing this hole will fill in with tissue.
 You need to see the dentist who did the extraction for treatment.

It is basically a focal bone infection without pus and is accompanied by severe pain (alveolalgia) and foul odor. It is also called alveolar osteitis and alveolitis sicca dolorosa.
