does cardiac mri show function of the heart? like if my cardiac mri comes back normal does that mean the heart is functioning ok?

Heart function: Cardiac MRI does not directly measure heart function, but it is very good at showing anatomic abnormalities. If MRI is normal, usually the heart is functioning normally. Fr true measure of heart function, ultrasound (cardiac echo) usually is used.

Cardiac MRI: The settings are for the best views of the Cardiac region - while you may be able to see lungs etc.. it is not optimal.

Possibly: The likelihood of a young woman having blocked arteries is very small.  You must be having cardiac symptoms so normal MRI may help at putting your mind at ease.

V Tach: Best way to diagnose, if not made with EKG HOLTER, is what is called a electrophysiologic study of the heart electrical system. They check the wiring to see where the shorts or cut wires are. And the relay boxes.

Pericardial disease: Pericardial thickening &amp; effusion (excess fluid in the sac around the heart) can be caused by a number of conditions including viral or idiopathic pericarditis (inflammation caused by a virus or by other unknown causes), or auto-immune illnesses such as systemic lupus. Echocardiogram: The data obtained by echo and MRI is obtained in different way and each has its own sensitivity and specificity for various data. Without knowing more about your situation we can't comment on which study might be more cogent for what information is being sought in you.

YES!!: A cardiac MRA was designed to show if there are "blocked" arteries...  And it is never a replacement for an Angiogram

my echo showed abnormal septal motion and ef of 50%. dr ordered a cardiac mri for further testing. the mri came back 'normal'. dr was worried enough to postpone upcoming cervical surgery so how can echo show abnormal septal motion but mri is normal?

: Abnormal septal motion is likely due to ischemic heart disease rather than a structural heart disease. Your EF is only borderline normal. I am not sure why cardiac MRI was ordered. You should have an exercise stress done if you do not have problem with treadmill walking. If you have problem with walking due to knee or hip condition, echocardiogram or nuclear stress test can be done.

Aneurysm: A cardiac mri can diagnose a thoracic aneurysm and a dissection. The ordering physician should help the radiologist by providing accurate clinical information and alert him/her that aneurysm and/or dissection is suspected.
