An infection obviously requires treatment with antibiotics. Tonsil stones can be treated with gargling or even tonsillectomy if gargling is not effective.

If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.

The most common causes of tonsillitis include strep, mono and other common bacteria.  Stds can also cause tonsillitis, but these are less common.  The only way to definitively determine the cause if the infection is with a culture.  You should be seen.
