See below: Asthma, copd, lung cancer, abnormal chest x-rays and ct scans, infections including bronchitis, pneumonia, TB and many others, pulmonary embolism, hemoptysis (coughing out blood), sarcoidosis, pulmonary fibrosis, occupational lung disease, generalized cough and shortness of breath, to name a few. A lot of us also specialize in critical care medicine and take care of patients in the icu.

Pulmonary nodules: I am assuming from your question that you know you have pulmonary nodules and this is a follow up?  If so then yes, you are at a high risk for problems due to smoking.  Don't ignore theses, they can be totally benign but due to the smoking need to be followed by pulmonary.

Many questions: I am assuming you mean your child was referred.  The specialist will review all available records and get a detailed history of your child's breathing issues as well as other medical symptoms that may be related.  Your child will have a detailed physical exam and based on the history and physical may have testing of breathing capacity(spirometry), xrays or CT scan, and lab tests.

Cause of dry cough: If CT scan is negative cancer can be ruled out

Cause of dry cough may be difficult to be pinned down.

: There is no treatment or cure for lung scarring, which is the most likely explanation for "patches" seen on CT that persist for months or years. You don't say the nature of your "mild breathing problems", but it may have nothing to do with your past covid or the lung patches. Your pulmonary specialist is the one to discuss this with. Your doctor may: suspect the pneumonia is not typical and may want the expertise of a specialist, but that is just speculation.  The only way to know for certain is to ask your doctor.

There are: many different types of pneumonia, and also a variety of conditions which could predispose to pneumonia.  A pulmonologist is in the best position to sort it out.  Perhaps your primary doc felt that there was something out of the ordinary?  But why speculate, you can ask your doctor the reason for the referral.

Either or both!: Either one would be helpful, both may be wise.  And second opinions are great anyway.  Get too different takes on your problem, ask plenty of questions, and take notes for later pondering.  Your primary care doc can recommend trustworthy docs and may have an opinion on which you should see first.  That is part of the job of your PCP,  to send you to the next best level of care for complex problems
