Do you chew tobacco?: White areas in the mouth are tricky to diagnose, especially when not even viewing them intraorally.  A fungal infection shows up as white in the mouth, so does thickening of the gum layer due to friction or trauma.  Or if you place chew in your bottom lip, that could do it also.  Please see your dentist.

Dark gums?: &quot;dark&quot; like in brown would probably mean normal pigmentation and this varies from individual to individual in the same manner as skin color. &quot;dark&quot; like in red\purple would probably indicate gum inflammation and periodontal problems.  Localized spots might indicate something else. Have your own dentist take a look.

May not be bad: An experienced person has to take a look. Possibilities are many and may  be  minor. Thrush and leukoplakia come to my mind. They may need medical treatment. Meanwhile try intense hygiene with frequent toothbrushing and mouth wash after meals.

White Spot: A white spot (or any colored spot/lesion) should always be seen by a dentist who can examine it. There are simple techniques; i.e. A simple brush biopsy, that can be performed to determine the cellular makeup of the lesion. It's always good to have a peace of mind that the lesion is something as simple as scar tissue....Etc. It is fairly cheap with or without insurance ~ $250 without any insurance.
