: There are muscles back there and also tendons that attach to the back of the skull. They are most likely the source of the pain and can be not only be tight like any other muscle but inflamed and cause painful symptoms. They are more irritated when someone is under stress. Relax, use ice/heat and if persistent see a physician.

Headache: The best way to get rid of headaches is to find a quiet, darkened room and lie down.  Spend 20-30 minutes focusing on your breathing to relax yourself even further.  Drink some fluids such as water.  If that does not help, then try some Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen as directed on the bottle.  If these things do not improve your headache or it worsens, then consult a medical provider.

Radiating: Yes, shooting pain is often a short, sudden radiating pain. It is not a dull, aching , or cramping type sensation. Shootong pain can occur spontaneously, or with certain movements. This type pain is often associated with nerve irritation, but can occur with some large muscle groups.
In the head , it can be nerve related , migrainous, referred from the muscles of the neck, or from the cervical spine.

Could be: It could be a muscle related pain in which case moist heat and gentle stretching may help.  Other wise i would suggest getting it diagnosed to make sure it is nothing more serious.  I would see an ENT physician if your primary care physician can't help.

See your dentist: Dentists specialize in treating facial issues.  See your dentist and have them evaluate you for bruxism, an abscessed tooth, trigeminal neuralgia, or TMJ.  Your symptoms could be a wide range of issues.  Your dentist should be able to help you figure out what is wrong or can point you in the direction of a specialist who can.  Best of luck :)

Need a bit more : information regarding duration of pain, radiation, associated symptoms if any and prior history of headaches, scalp/brain surgery, recent trauma, fevers and overall health.  Additionally, any new medications would be useful.  In general, pain that lasts but a few seconds, is easily located  and has no other significant symptoms is benign.  That being said,, any changes should be evaluated by PCP.

what should i do about my back? earlier today i hit the top of my head pretty hard and it pushed down on my neck . now j can barely move and there ispain shooting through my upper back and rib cage plus i have a headache. what does it mean?

You : You may have injured your head and neck when you hit the top of your head.  Sometimes this can cause bleeding in the skull or broken vertebrae in the neck. I would recommend going to emergency room or urgent care to be checked out.  Best of luck!
