Not necessarily: Many people who do not have nf have a few café-au-lait spots . Usually start appearing in infancy.If a young child has five or more, at least ½ inch or 15 mm in size post puberty   look for other signs such  as  neurofibromas — tumors along skin and lisch nodules, tiny, noncancerous tumors on the iris (the colored part of the eye). Consult physician to better assess individual signs for diagnosis.

i have a cafe au lait spot the size of a pea next to my nipple sometimes it hurts and sometimes just my nipple hurts. what does that mean?

Tender cafe au lait: these as small flat pigmented birthmarks.  they are sometimes (if more than 6 and larger than 5 mm before puberty) a sign of neurofibromatosis and needs to be checked.  Assuming this isnt the case  - i think its benign and nothing to worry about  - I suspect your pain may be coming from the nipple  -  perhaps from excessive irritation from your bra.   Cafe au lait are usually benign.  Good luck

Some basics: NF1 clinical diagnosis requires 6 or more cafe-au-lait patches at least 5 mm in greatest diameter before puberty &amp; 15 mm after puberty. In addition 2 or more neurofibromas, a plexiform neuroma, axillary freckling, lisch nodules, optic gliomas or an affected 1st degree relative. If you are preoccupied with NF1 see a geneticist for an eval.

Ignore them: It is normal for people to have  a few. You would need 8 or more sizable spots by your age to fall under suspicion for that disorder.

Neurofibromatosis: Cafe-au-lait (french=coffee with milk) spots are tan patches at least  1cm.  Multiple such spots occur in hereditary neurofibromatosis or von recklinghausen's or (erroneously) "elephant man's" disease".  Other signs include  nerve cell tumors neurofibromas(soft, fleshy, skin-colored, grouped papules, nodules, tumors), armpit freckles, and benign &/or malignant acoustic (8th cranial nerve) neuromas.

Unlikely: Unlikely because of not enough spots.There are different definition, but 6 or more sports greater than 1/4 inch size is a standard.So not probable.

can tattoos hide my cafe au lait spots?

Possibly: It depends.  If you are going to get some ornamental tattoo then it could possibly hide your spots.  However, if you are considering tattooing your spots individually to "fill them in" then, technically yes, it might work.  The trouble will be in getting the tattoo ink to match your skin color.  And when your skin tans (if you tend to tan) the tattoos will not darken.  Hope this helps.
