Loss of binocularity: The 2 eyes have to be working perfectly together to get good stereo. If 1 eye is misaligned or blurred, the stereo decreases.

i had a vitrectomy 2.5 weeks ago for a detached retina. my dr. injected a gas bubble. it is getting smaller, but there seems to be what looks like a floater inside it. it does not travel outside the bubble. is this the bubble breaking up?

New?: Needs evaluation, it may be  from retinal changes but sounds as if maybe a cataract is also a possibility. See your ophthalmologist.

Soon: Of course, alot of the recovery depends on what kind of tear you had in the retina and what kind of surgery you had.  As a rule, you can read a little within 48 hours or so but your eye will need plenty of rest as it will tire easily for a while.  Therefore, don't strain your eye and don't read for long periods of time or in low light without resting your eye.

Depends!: On how extensive the retinal detachment and repair was.  Your reading vision may never return, but if all goes well you should start seeing better and possibly be able toread with that eye 45-90 days following the surgery.  It may be longer, and you may need subsequent surgeries as well (cataract).

Yes: Most common procedure to repair a retinal detachment resulting from a macular hole is a vitrectomy (remove the fluids from the back of the eyeball), replace it with a gas, and position the patient face down for some period of time (sometimes weeks) to allow the hole to close and the detachment to resolve. Most macular holes do not cause a detached retina, but many require a similar operation.

No: Follow your eye surgeon's recommendations. Often maintaining a certain position, such as face down, or sleeping on the right side, is important to keep the gas bubble in contact with the area of the retina where the detachment occurred. Moving too much early in the healing phase could case your retina to re-detach.
