what could cause tongue muscle fatigue when chewing? my tongue feels tired and cramps some when chewing. i dont have pain any other times other than eating. no sores or lumps. can swallow normal. potential for bulbar onset als?

: The tongue isn't actively involved in chewing but does play a role in moving food so it can be swallowed. The massiter muscles.and temporomandibular joint are more apt to fatigue in chewing. I did have one case of severe lingual fatigue which turned out to be an early manifestation of Parkinson's disease. A specialist in oral pathology at a university hospital can evaluate and advise you further.

TMJ: It is likely tmj. Try Ibuprofen or see an oral facial maxial surgeon. But please see a doctor if this is really affecting you.

Tongue spasms: often gets better on its own and goes away. However, the cramp is not a disease, it is actually a symptom of another problem or condition. See your dentist or PCP for consultation.

Dystonia: Acute dystonic reactions involving the tongue can be brought on by certain medications. An evaluation of your medication is needed. There are medications used to treat this condition. I recommend a trial of benztropine (cogentin) or diphenhydramine (benadryl) or both. Klonopin (clonazepam) may also help. Need to also make sure your electrolytes are normal with blood test. Consider botulinum toxin if no better.

Back spasms: Sounds like you had a back spasm which can immobilize you due to pain. Drinking more liquids and taking some magnesium can help to relax the muscles. Not sure what to make with the granules on the tongue, it may be normal.

No: Tongue swelling nor muscle cramps indicate renal disease.  Renal disease may be present if you have swelling in your legs, have a decrease in appetite or see a decrease in urination.

See below: Not likely, sound more like a allergic reaction, and possible electrolyte disorder. It is possible some kidney disorders cause electrolyte disturbances which lead to muscle cramps.

Possible: The pain is possible, the cramping is an unusual complaint for a tongue problem.  However the the tongue has similar sensory nerves as other areas of your body and you could be having these symptoms because of your primary problem.

GE: Seems like you have stomach infection which in large number of cases is viral in nature and self-limiting. But it also seems that you are bit dehydrated. You must consult a physician as you may need hydration done by mouth or vein.
