Cannot diagnose: This could be something in the spinal column, irritation of the pleura, musculoskeletal, neurologic, and so an and so on.  See a doctor and get this evaluated.  As you are well aware, it is not normal.  Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

how can i help muscle pain (maybe strain?) in my upper back? my shoulder blades & the space between them have been achey w/occasional sharp pain for a few weeks. i noticed it happening more when i lean over or in a weird direction. what causes this?

: This can happen due to muscle pull or sprain.
If you are uncomfortable, take Tylenol and see if it resolves the pain/discomfort.
If the pain persists for more than 2-3 weeks or if it is getting worse despite taking Tylenol, then you should have a medical check up with your family doctor. He may do a chest X-ray as a simple first test.

Sharp pain: Sharp pain between shoulder blades may be due to infection, neoplasm, cardiac irregularities, arthritic changes, muscular adversity, neoplasm, neurologic disorder, etc. You need to be examined, have your overall medical history/medications/current symptoms evaluated, possibly lab tests, possibly imaged. Do you have a problem, perhaps. Should it be evaluated, yes. Call your GP.

A few possibilities: Pain near the shoulder blades can occur for a number of reasons. Cervical spine degenerative disease can be painful in the morning and after rest, like other types of arthritis, and can be referred to the area described. Same for certain types if tendonitis and bursitis: sharply painful until the "kinks" work out. Any significant  pain lasting more than a few weeks should be seen by an ortho doc.

TRIGGER POINTS : If your chest x-ray is normal, look for trigger points in the rhomboids, infraspinatus, longissimus, upper iliocostalis, and posterrior serratus  muscles.

Can be neither: It can very much be muscles, bones or nerves in your chest wall. NSAIDS, unless contraindicated, would help, warm compresses too, besides resting the area and avoid lifting heavy objects and have a correct posture while sitting/driving, if no improvement or symptoms are severe and uncontrollable see your doctor for evaluation, best wishes
