Meralgia : Most common source of numbness over thigh is secondary to compression of lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, at or near superior iliac crest, and this can cause a mix of pain and numbness over antero-lateral thigh.  Might improve with loose clothing over waist and hip.  You probably have meralgia paresthetica, less likely lumbar radiculopathy.

Maybe nerve pressed: A person who gets numbness, tingling, or odd sensations in a part of his body only when in certain positions, is likely pressing on the nerve to that part of the body. Pressing on the blood vessels to that part of the body is also possible, but less likely. The person can see his primary care doctor and show him exactly what happens. The doctor may refer to a neurologist for further evaluation.

Pinched nerve: Numbness in upper thigh is usually caused by a pinched nerve near outer groin. The nerve is called lateral cutaneous nerve of thigh. It causes numbness, tingling and burning in the front and outer side of thigh. Condition is referred as meralgia paresthetica.  Other possibility can be pinching of nerves in upper part of lower back.

Blood supply: While sitting too long or sleep in one position may cause compression of blood vessels or nerves, try to change the position if it get better then probably nothing to worry.

Most numbness: problems are caused by some sort of nerve compression or dysfunction. Meralgia paresthetica is caused by compression of the lateral cutaneous nerve which supplies feeling to the outer thigh. In many cases the cause is not known; sometimes tight clothing, seat belt injury, weight gain. It usually resolves on its own. Wear looser clothing, lose weight if needed, OTC Tylenol or ibuprofen. Not herpes: HSV infections don't do anything like this. Despite what you can find on line, HSV idoes not cause neurological symptoms that persist more than 1-2 days, immediately before an obvious outbreak. Since previously brought on by leg position, almost certainly this is compression of a nerve in the upper leg or nerve root exiting the spine. It could be the start of more serious problems; see a doctor.

Back problem: It could be a trapped nerve from a bulging disk in your back. Could be a too tight muscle as well. See your doctor for an evaluation. Physical therapy may help, and i know acupuncture will.

i have been having a tingling sensation on my right leg, and has caused a bit of numbness. the feeling started on the thigh, but has now moved down to the leg. what could this be?

Nerve problem: Either a peripheral nerve disease or central,compression could be this in unilateral fashion. Make an appointment with a neurologist, PMR doc, or you FP to evaluate this with appropriate testing to make an accurate diagnosis. Then you can start on a program to improve this,problem. Good luck

hey, im 16 years old, recently ive been experiencing numbness in the inner thigh and groin area. it happens at least once a day and lasts for about 1-2 minutes there is no pain involved but i was curious what could cause it.

: Such localized&amp;transient numbness could be caused by minor superficial neuropathy or some impingement of the femoral nerve. In the absence of more symptoms, I'm not sure if it's worth consulting a neurologist at this time for what appears to be only a trivial symptom.
