Hiccups: Hiccups - also known as singultus- caused by rapid downward contraction of diaphragm - usually caused by irritation of nerves that surround the diaphragm, stomach, esophagus and neck.  Hiccups can occur in linked episodes as you describe but virtually always resolve without an obvious cause. Very rarely they can persist but treatment is available.

Sleep apnea?: There is nothing I've heard regarding a connection w/ autism, but hiccups during sleep have been related to the breathing pattern that can occur in sleep apnea. Hiccups are caused by involuntary movements of the diaphragm which might be set off by the disturbed breath rhythms. Perhaps his pediatrician can evaluate this and either treat him for it or refer to a sleep specialist. Best wishes.

You might be : Suffering from obstructive sleep apnea.  This is a condition where you stop breathing for a few minutes, then gasp for breath when you become hypoxic.  This gasp might be what your wife thinks is hiccoughing.  Try sleeping on your side,  not supine.  If that doesn't help, see if your doctor can refer you for a sleep study.

can my 2 year old have night time gripe water by mommys bliss to help with sleep? will it hurt her? she had it when she was younger for hiccups and colic, im just nervous about giving her melatonin, i trust the gripe water more.

Establishing a stable predictable night routine that allows the kid to wind down &amp; get ready for bed may be of help. No feeds at bedtime &amp; reading to her from a distance may help.
