Hiccups: Hiccups - also known as singultus- caused by rapid downward contraction of diaphragm - usually caused by irritation of nerves that surround the diaphragm, stomach, esophagus and neck. Hiccups can occur in linked episodes as you describe but virtually always resolve without an obvious cause. Very rarely they can persist but treatment is available.
