Many Possibilities : Normally the diaphragm contracts and expands under one's control to aid in filling the lungs with air. Hiccups occur when the one's diaphragm contracts involuntarily. The most common cause of hiccups while sleeping goes undiagnosed. Other conditions that could cause this symptom are sleep apnea, laryngitis, diabetes, kidney disease, stroke, alcoholism, and certain medications. Source mayo clinic.
