hi my girlfriends left bottom part of her rib cage is swollen and she complains of pain. she has gal bladder problems i think she might have gal stones could this be the cause? and what medication can we use temporarily for gal stones

Gallbladder: The gallbladder is on the right side, so it would be unlikely to be the cause of left sides pain. There is a rare entity known as situs inversus where some or all of the abdominal organs are on opposite sides. A proper evaluation from a primary care doc will be your best bet in figuring it out. Any: Depending upon the exact location of the pain, medical history and current symptoms any is possible with probably even more actual sources for her symptoms. Best would be to encourage her to see her GP, so that a proper exam and diagnosis can be formulated. Keep a log of symptoms and take to doc.

Sometimes: It is possible to see stones in a contracted gallbladder however doing an ultrasound after a period of fasting is better as it allows the gallbladder to distend. The distended gallbladder is easier to see on ultrasound- and smaller stones can be picked up better.  Other factors like obesity and having a lot of intestinal gas can sometimes obscure ultrasound pictures.

Gallbladder source: The gallbladder in the right upper quadrant of your abdomen is the source of the gall stones which are generally made of hardened bile that the organ contains.  Sometimes the gallbladder has to be surgically removed due to the pain. Using high fatty foods + obesity or pregnancy are major contributors to gall stones.

Maybe none: Gallstones are very frequent, but they are benign (no cancer), therefore most likely, removal of gallbladder and stone is curative. Gallbladder carcinoma is associated with gallstones, but very rare. Check the pathology report to see if cancer was detected or not. Spreading to the liver depends on how advanced (deeply invasive) it was at the time of detection.

Maybe not gallstones: The three most common causes for this pain are gallstones, acid reflux, and angina.  Some patients have gallbladder pain without stones.  I would treat this with antireflux medication as a trial and consider a CCK HIDA scan and endoscopy of the stomach.  Your doctor will need to determine your risk for a heart-related cause.

While its not completely clear why some develop the chemical imbalance, we do know that gallstones are more common in obese people, women (especially oral contraceptives/hormone replacement), high fat intake, diabetes, rapid weight loss - to name a few.

Constipation: The stones are caused by inspissation or dried stool.  This can be associated with poor hydration, but also poor transit time through colon. You colon likes to suck water out and when stool does not move fast enough it gets dried out and hard.  Drink more fluids. and eat more fiber and exercise will keep bowel movements more regular.
