Hemibody difference: It depends if you have any sensory symptoms. If there are no sensory symptoms and EMG is normal, then this might not be a problem. Muscle atrophy usually is determined by measurements like circumferential measurements of limbs or measurements from MRI images. Emg determines peripheral nerve or muscle issues. Muscles can hypertrophy with use. Muscle atrophy can occur with lack of use like bed rest.

muscle biopsy of my arm says chronic denervation, and angular atrophic fibers. i have a herniated disc at c5-c6 compressing nerves and my doctor thinks that is the cause. i have no nerve pain, i only have chronic muscle cramping. is that possible?

: By PubMed.gov: "Our data show that 60% of patients with muscle cramps who lack neuropathic complaints have small fiber neuropathy. You can google "cramp and small fiber neuropathy". I wonder what muscle of your arm the biopsy was taken so we can correlate with your radiculopathy.

Yes to both : That pinch or narrowing of the spinal canal causes you to have pain. Pain when you move it is a signal that if you don't move it it will not hurt. Lack of use will cause that muscle to thin or atrophy. Best find out what's going on and take care of it

Mushy Muscles: True atrophy takes years of disuse to occur.  What you may be referring to is actual power.  Muscle power depends upon recruitment of fibers.  Working out helps create new fibers and creates recruitment of more fibers for a particular action.  When you cease these activities, certain fibers called fast and slow twitch operate differently and as a result power will diminish.
