These muscles can cramp and depolarize causing the spams.  More commonly, electrolyte imbalances shuch as low potassium. Complicated causes of "charley horses" are occlusive atherosclerosis, neuromuscular diseases, spinal stenosis or annulus pulpossum  herniations.

: When you exceed the endurance capabilities of a muscle, it locks up in order to protect itself from tearing. (otherwise, continued use would cause the tear.) this type of spasm or cramp is known as a charlie horse. They can occur in any muscle that you exceed that muscle's endurance limit.

Calf pain: Sounds like your calf muscles are cramping. Do you exercise your legs? If not then you should try doing a specific  leg program to strengthen your calf muscles. You will need to do 4-5 sets of 20-25 reps of calf raises. Also i would incorporate exercises for your quads snd hamstrings and even your glutes. Progressive resistance exercises is the best way to prevent muscle problems.

Muscle cramps: Frequent generalized muscle irritability and cramping may be caused by deficiencies of calcium,magnesium,potassium or sodium. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a magnesium supplement to try, but if symptoms persist see your physician for evaluation and testing.

Several posibilities: The most likely is that you are sleeping in some position in which the muscles, because of lack of movement, or pressure on them from bedclothing, are stressed and cramping.  Loosen up the bedclothes and change the position in which you sleep and see if that helps.  If not, and you have any risks for vascular disease, see a doctor.  Good luck.

Edema: Ankle swelling in just one leg of nuance it should be worked up. There could be many causes like blood clots any obstruction inside abdomen.  See a doctor.
