Many things.: Asc-us stands for atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance.  This means that there are a few cells with mild abnormality that are not definitely associated with hpv or precancer/cancer.  Sometimes these cell changes are caused by other infections such as yeast infections or bacterial vaginosis.  Sometimes these cell changes are related to hormonal alterations or mechanical irritation.

Ovaries?: Are you sure the doctor said ovaries? ASCUS cells of the cervix are a very common finding on a pap smear. These are cervical cells not ovarian cells. I would contact your doctor and ask for clarification on the body part.

No!: PCOS and ASCUS are totally unrelated. ASCUS cells could be a sign of an HPV viral infection. Have you been vaccinated against HPV? Check with your doctor about this. HPV can cause cervical changes leading to cervical pre cancer and cancer in some women.

New delivery, yes: If the pap smear was done within 8 weeks of a vaginal delivery, a ASCUS pap result may appear due to the cervical cells mixing with the shrinking endometrium(involution) and its' cells. However, an ASCUS pap (atypical cells of undetermined significance) is a description of what was seen by the Pathologist that bears little clinical bearing other than repeating the pap if MD is concerned.

Check for HPV: Ascus: acronym for atypical cells of undetermined significance and indicates mild cellular cervical changes with an unknown cause. Most common causes of ascus pap smears are minor infection,  cervical inflammation, and hpv infection.  Hsv unlikely. You should have hpv dna test done and check with your doctor on whether they can do it on your same ascus sample. Likely will repeat pap in 6-12 months.

: It is safe to wait one year. Do get PAPs as recommended by your doctor. You may wish to get HPV vaccine to prevent infection.

can squamous metaplasia cause an ascus pap result? had leep for cin 2, 10 months ago. just had f/u pap, came back ascus w/ squamous metaplasia. f/u colpo showed no lesions. doc said 1 year pap f/u now. likelihood ill get cin grade again by then?

Maybe, maybe not: CIN can recur after appropriate treatment, however it is not present in the ASCUS/squamous metaplasia of today's report. It is a good idea to continue follow up pap smears regularly to get early notification if CIN does recur.

: You probably had a mild cervicitis (sex-related?) which presents with inflammatory exudate and Atypical Squamous Cells of Undetermined Significance (ASCUS). HPV is negative so you are likely safe. Follow-up for ASCUS is usually a repeat Pap smear at six months. Good luck.
