It's caused by a different herpes-type virus than the one that causes oral herpes (cold sores). Shingles needs immediate diagnosis and treatment to avoid serious pain both in the next few days and ongoing pain later. See a doctor ASAP.

No: No, a cold sore is caused by a virus. You probably had the virus and were picking at the spot because as the virus starts to erupt, it causes swelling and tingling at the site. It takes a few days for the scab to form. Eventually it will heal and will be back to normal. There are meds that will shorten the duration of a cold sore. But they work only if taken early. See your doctor asap.
