my ast went from 14 to 34 & alt from 9 to 28 .only thing different was i exercised  so sore i could  not move could that cause rise ?

Yes: Ast and alt can come from muscles (not just from the liver).

if i was intoxicated when bloodwork was taken, could it cause a temporary rise in alt? i did not have a ggt test?

Accepted Answer

: Yes, alcohol can definitely increase liver enzymes, however other causes cannot be ruled out. The only way to differentiate would be to abstain from alcohol for few weeks and have liver enzymes rechecked with the help of your primary care doc.

: Always need normal values for the tests.  Different in UK sometimes. Check meds you are taking by going to Drugs.com and look for liver effects. Also discuss with your Dr how much alcohol you drink a day or week. Cheers.

: Not unless you drank a quart or so.  Review how much alcohol you normally drink and look up alcoholic liver disease.

what would cause low total bili? other lft's are normal although alt & ast are rising.on methotrexate (sarocidosis) im sure will be lowering mtx soon

Not a problem: I'm not that concerned about the bilirubin, but you're on Methotrexate and we have to watch the liver in that situation. I would ask your physician to assess what you're doing that could make the liver tests go  up such as medications or alcohol.

See below: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, elevated ALT and AST indicate damage to liver cells. If you are overweight, lose weight. If you drink alcohol, stop entirely.

Find cause: I'm not concerned about the vitamin d. Many people your age have high alk phos without any real problem. If stopping alcohol and unneeded rx's did not return ast/alt to a good level, time to rule out hepatitis b ; c, autoimmune hepatitis, hemochromatosis, wilson's (doubt at your age), autoimmune hepatitis (can be) ; consider if you may have metabolic syndrome / want to exercise more.

Yes: Some medications for dm are metabolized in the liver.  Most inhaled meds for COPD can also affect liver function.

Some diseases of the lung, like Alpha one antitrypsin disease present as both COPD and liver enzyme elevation.

will high triglysaride cause high alt ?

Accepted Answer

ALT?: Usually know.  However very high triglycerides can lead to pancreatitis which can have abnormal liver function tests.  Additionally, patients with fatty liver can have abnormal lft and some with high tgs.
