what can you drink with braces? i heard that sugar melts the glue on your teeth. is that true?

Accepted Answer

Braces: You can drink whatever you want while you have braces in moderation.  Sugar will not melt the glue but it will cause decay and white spots so keep sugar ly and acidic drinks to a minimum.  This includes sodas, iced teas, energy drinks, . Both regular and diet drinks are destructive.  Drink more water.

Tea: I am unaware of any contraindication to green tea and braces.

Swelling: If teeth are not flossed daily as space between teeth is closed gums will swell.  Couple this with the irritation from your deep overbite and you have an addressable problem that can be very annoying.  Please see the General Dentist or specialist Orthodontist that is treating you for adjustment to your braces and your Oral Hygiene that will give you relief.

: 3rd time you've asked, each time with slightly different information. Have you taken her temperature? Haver you called her Pediatrician to see if she has a viral infection?

Two issues: Coffee only produces external stains on the teeth which can be minimized with proper brushing and flossing and can be removed with a professional cleaning.  The more you drink the greater the chance of staining.The inherent shade of the teeth is a separate issue.  There are many whitening methods to permanently whiten the teeth.  Discuss all this with your own dentist after the braces are removed.

: In all probability coincidental. Possibly virus or a bacterial infection (as in food poisoning). A Covid home test may be prudent. Take her temperature then call your child's Pediatrician. Then call the Orthodontist to report what has been  going on.

A few thoughts...: Intermittent pain can be caused by a carious lesion or gum recession (exposed root). If your teeth shifted and you're hitting that tooth with increased force, that could be an issue too. Best bet is to have your dentist take a look.

Yes you can: Avoiding carbonation is to avoid acidic drinks that etch your teeth around the brackets.  In general you should also avoid, fruit juices, red wine, and a carbonated drinks.  The alcohol in itself is not contraindicated (in moderation).

how can i make sure my teeth don't  have stains on them once i get my braces off? i drink a lot of coffee

Accepted Answer

Stains: Coffee stains can be removed easily by your dentist so this is not a problem. What is a problem is having foods and liquids high in refined sugars and acids. Brush and floss and at least rinse out after meals and snacks. Ask your own Orthodontist to monitor your home care.
