How high a fever?: Most likely a cough and low-grade fever lasting a few days is just a "cold", a viral upper respiratory infection. Fever over 102 f (39 c) should be evaluated by your child's pediatrician as bronchiolitis and pneumonia are possibilities.

Cold or more serious: How long has your child been sick?  Most colds include fever, runnynose, being grumpy and cough.  Is your child grumpy or sleepy.  Lethargy could be a more serious symptom and may warrant seeing your doctor sooner than later.  And as far as the cough, is this causing difficulty in breathing, if so, your child should be seen by a doctor.

Fever ?: Any 1mo with a fever over 100.4 should be evaluated by a physician as soon as possible. NOW!!!! The possibility that they picked up germs during labor/delivery makes it mandatory to be seen. The issue could be life threatening.

Not uncommon: Having one or two episodes of short lived viral infections a year is pretty normal. Viral infections last 3 to 7 days typically.  Typically it will happen in the winter months.

Fevers : Fevers for the most part aren't dangerous and are just the body's natural reaction to fighting off an infection. Most of these infections are viral and may be accompanied by runny nose, sore throat, congestion, mild rash, or nothing at all. Since fevers aren't dangerous, we usually treat the fever with Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen just to make the child more comfortable as their body fights the illness.

"red flags" that we look for with fever to indicate something more serious is going on are: 
-fevers that last 5 days or more 
-fevers persistently above 104f orally 
-a child that acts very sick - very irritable or difficult to wake 
-difficulty breathing 
-vomiting, diarrhea, refusal to drink, or dehydration 
-a purple rash, esp on the legs 
-stiff neck 
-any complaints of pain such as the ear, throat, stomach or a joint

Fever, cold & cough: It sounds like your daughter is fighting an infection. Having fever is not necessarily bad. If her cough is getting worse and she has difficult breathing, and is not eating or drinking, she should be checked by her pediatrician.

: Safe/maybe/recommended=no. Studies in the US have shown these products have little to offer kids under 6 and have been discouraged for more than a decade. At most they give you something to do, at worst, the kid decides to self medicate later &amp; ends up in the ER with an overdose, which is why they quit recommending it.

Fluids, humidiity: There are not any good/effective cough medicines that are helpful in this age group. Increasing fluid intake will help, as will using a humidifier. Sometimes a spoonful of honey will help settle the cough. If the cough persists, i encourage you to see your pediatrician to make sure there is no indication of pneumonia (esp. Since he's had fever) or any bronchospasm/wheezing needing different meds.
