Should be seen: He should be seen by his doctor. He may have an infection. The most common type of mouth infection can cause blisters and ulcers in the mouth which make it very painful to eat or drink. When this happens, young children can easily get dehydrated. Another possibility would be strept throat, but your doctor would need to check him to find out.

It could also be: a viral infection. I would recommend also seeing his doctor, especially if you can do that sooner than the endodontist. it may also be something he ate. Hopefully his doctor will be able to figure it out. Meanwhile have him take some ibuprofen.

You may also need to see an Oral Surgeon, Primary Care Physician, and possibly someone who limits their practice to Head and Neck Pain.  It might not be a bad idea to go to a teaching hospital or dental school if need be.
