Time release: Most of the time, the prohibition on chewing is because something has been done in the manufacturing of the pill to either prevent dissolution until it reaches a certain part of the gastrointestinal tract or delays release of the drug so that it performs as a time release product.  Chewing would destroy those functions.

Should be OK: It should work just fine, but probably will taste bad. If you have trouble taking pills, talk with your doctor. Perhaps she would prescribe the pediatric suspension (liquid) instead of pills.

Not normally: It is never advisable to crush Methadone unless advised by your physician prescribing it.  Methadone tablets include Methadone but might also include magnesium stearate, and microcrystalline cellulose.  All these are proportioned for long acting delivery.  If you disrupt the pill you can overdose and die.  Please don't risk your life over a pill.

The latter group act longer and therefore, more likely to give you dry mouth, higher heart beats with palpitations and perhaps blurry vision, or urinary retention.
