A member asked:

What happens if a patient chews a pill that should not be chewed/crushed etc? and why are some pills given this warning?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Time release: Most of the time, the prohibition on chewing is because something has been done in the manufacturing of the pill to either prevent dissolution until it reaches a certain part of the gastrointestinal tract or delays release of the drug so that it performs as a time release product. Chewing would destroy those functions.
