Situations do differ: Assisted-dying is not illegal in about 5 states in the U.S., so if an adult there has a terminal illness, or is in a comparably bad situation, she has the right as a free American to choose her own destiny. However, many people become suicidal for other reasons, which are often temporary (breaking up with a loved one, loss of a job, etc...), so calling 911 to save them gives them a second chance.

So sorry for the: trauma you and your family are going through.  Almost certainly it was a quick and painless death.  If you need a little emotional support consider a few sessions w/a grief counselor.  Peace and good health.

Despair : The patient who commits suicide is in a lot of pain and despair in many ways. Neurotransmitters are severely out of balance and narcotics and other antidepressive medications can actually drive people to suicide. .

If someone is suicidal , get them to help fast.

Grief stages: The kübler-ross model, commonly known as the five stages of grief, includes denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.  This applies to suicides as well as other types of loss.  But people vary: these stages don't always happen, or happen in this order.  Be available (but not intrusive) to your friend.  Grief counseling may help if she's open to it.

About Compassion: While some ppl who commit suicide may have suffered from psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions &/o other forms of distorted perceptions/thoughts) most have not. They're just' human beings who come 2feel a terrible sense of hopelessness, despair &/or shame...Who come 2 believe there's no way out. Ur doc was evidently suffering. But s/he may have helped many despite own personal struggles.

Suicide: Suicide is often the cause of depression and other brain illnesses.  Suicide causes the obvious loss of life, and also creates suffering, guilt, and sadness among those 'left behind'.  It is not about forcing one to live, it is about treating an illness that makes individuals think of suicide.  Suicide is harmful for the person that attempts or commits suicide and everyone who knows them.

Lethality of attempt: Per your statistics, 3% succeed, and unfortunately your friend was one of those. Suicide attempts vary widely in both lethal intent and lethality of method. Overdoses with some pills may cause only prolonged sleep, while overdoses with others (especially if mixed with alcohol) are rapidly fatal. Jumping, firearms, and hanging are highly lethal methods, more likely to succeed on the first try.

Counseling, time &..: My condolences.When someone commits suicide it's common for friends & family to feel partly responsible but usually the departed was very depressed & it has little to do with others.I don't know if you or anyone could have helped if your friend didn't ask for help.Seeing a grief counselor or attending a support group can help.The passage of time will help-acute grief lasts about a year.See comment.
